Category: Advanced B5 Serum

Unfortunately my “pre-bash massage” was just cancelled – dang 😦 – so I’m writing an NYE makeup post instead!

Happy New Year’s party preparations to all of you! I’m getting ready for The Golden Era event at my father’s winery. I want to look my best, and I want you to look your best too – even if you’re not planning to go out for NYE! Here are eight steps to a flawless look:

1. Exfoliate – Perfect makeup requires well-tended skin. A week to a couple of days before the big night start doing masks, peels, and scrubs. The Cleansing Oil is also an excellent way to polish, exfoliate, and brighten your skin: Do a 20-minute massage with it instead of the normal quick cleanse. (Did you know the Cleansing Oil takes off makeup really well? Buh-bye makeup dissolver.)

Of course, hopefully you have consulted a skincare professional about what products are best for your skin. If you trust your exfoliant not to cause a breakout or irritate your skin, using one even the night before will help your skin look radiant.

My picks: Gyco-A Gel, Crystal C Serum and Peeling Cream. Just so happens two of these are January’s Product Feature with Double Rewards!

2. Moisturize – Those of you who read my blog regularly know that when you discipline the skin, you also need to use plenty of TLC. Moisturize the entire face, neck, and décolleté, as well as the eye area. Even oily and acne-prone skin types need moisturizer. Your makeup will look so much better if your skin is well hydrated.

My picks: Hy-Drate, Vitamin Cream, Chamomile, Eye Plus Cream, Lipo-Gen.

3. Prime – Every great artist knows that preparing the canvas is key. Getting the skin ready for the application of cosmetics makes the finished product look so much better. Absorb Oil Control is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin: It is an oil controller and hydrator in one. Mineral Primer will fill in the fine lines and imperfections and make your foundation last. Use Concealer around the eye area.

4. Apply FoundationMineral Makeup is my favorite for your base. Use a small brush for extra coverage in the areas that need it. Use a darker color to contour, like the hollows of your cheeks or the sides of your nose. Contour the eyes with shades of brown, especially if you have droopy lids. (Remember: dark recedes, light brings forward.) Highlighter under the brow bone accentuates the arch. I carry BDB Duo Concealer: it’s a pencil with concealer on one end and highlighter on the other – another “twofer”!

5. Add Color – Glitter (small particles, used sparingly) is a hot look for NYE. Aging skin doesn’t do well with glitter though. I personally like the Youngblood Mineral Makeup in the color Sunglow for sparkle and pop. Blush should be applied to the apple of the cheek only if you have a very thin and long face, so you can create width. If your face is round, apply blush on the cheek starting at the edge of the iris and swooping up to the temples and into the hairline.

Shadow color can be added next. Remember: if you are playing up the eyes, go easy on the lips, and vice versa.

6. Lashes – Right now I am playing with and loving LashSense One Step by SeneGence. It is a lash growth and conditioning product and mascara. And of course I must have my beloved

Blackout Mineral Mascara by Youngblood. I always use two mascaras. I find I get the best lashes that way. Lash Primer is also excellent for extra volume and conditioning. For those of us who need to curl our lashes, I like the MAC curler best.

7. Lips Bright and bold is on trend for both NYE and spring 2011. You know I am partial to LipSense long-lasting lipcolor!  I’ll be wearing Plum as a base, then Brick, and the top coat will be Neutral. Because this lipcolor is applied in 3 coats, I played on my hand to find a color that matched my shoes. (Check them out: They are comfy with leather uppers – Ross!) You can create any color you want when you have the basic Lipsense colors.

As an alternative, I like recommending a lip pencil and plumping colored gloss – both by Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.

8. Eyebrows – Getting the right shape requires professional help – at least to get you started, at best for maintenance. You’re not stuck with the eyebrows you have: You can create the perfect brows at home.  How? If you have thinning brows, start using Brow Boost right away. All the Billion Dollar Brows products rock! Cosmetics for creating the perfect eyebrows – like pencils, powders, and brow-setting gel – will transform blah brows to bomb brows!

Tu’el’s Glorious Gold™ Eye & Lip Gel by Eva’s Esthetics

This is a light fragrance-free gel that diminishes dark circles, improves circulation, moisturizes, and reduces wrinkles around the eyes and lips. The Bearberry, Licorice and Blackberry are natural lighteners, so you can also spot-treat your age or sun spots.

Glorious Gold is formulated for aging skin, I suggest Eye Plus if you are under 30. 😉 Which ever product you choose, you NEED to use something special for the delicate skin around the eyes.
I suggest Hy-Drate first (maybe instead of “underwear” we should call this a “foundational garment”) lol, apply this as close to the eye as you feel comfortable, then Glorious Gold or Eye Plus Lotion.
What’s in it?
Purified Water, Glycerin, Arbutin, Wild Thyme Extract, Lupin Extract, Bearberry Extract, Blackberry Extract, Licorice Extract, Ginko Biloba Extract, Chamomile Extract, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hyaluronic Acid, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Polysorbate 20, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate. 1oz. $80

I am so excited to bring you this month’s special Product Feature. (It’s a 2-fer!)  Tu’el’s Cleansing Oils and Herbalizers and the new Travel Pack, which includes the Tu’el cleansing system for A.M. and P.M.,  Hy-Drate,  (both in 1 oz. bottles), a sample of Peeling Cream and a sample of the appropriate evening moisturizer for your skin-type.

These products are a delight to use  because they bring “spa” home to you. I don’t choose to carry products at Star Brows on performance alone. I want to use skincare that inspires me, works, is as close to “natural” as possible, is a good value and is enjoyable to use.

Taking care of your skin is sometimes perceived as drudgery, but personal care can be renewing. It’s simply a matter of perspective. If you are in the former camp, are you open to thinking about skincare in a new way?

Last month we launched Star Brow’s Rewards and I couldn’t keep September’s feature, Youngblood’s Pressed Mineral Compacts, on the shelves! I ended up happily doing  rain checks!

I’m so glad you’re all enjoying the new Rewards perks.  I appreciate all of you!

The beautiful model in this picture is a friend and client,  Amanda De Bello. She brings the customer testimonial for this month’s feature:

“Linda was kind enough to answer many of my questions by simply “trying out” Tu’el products on my face, which ended in a purchase I do not regret.  The Cleansing Oil is such a relief to my skin (it even gently removes makeup!) & I can feel my face literally getting softer each day I use it.  The Herbalizer is like nothing I’ve ever tried before; my skin seems to “drink it up” and the herbs smell so good! I have been known to spend money on high quality, big name products, and honestly just wasn’t getting the results I was happy with. What I realized is that previously I was willing to spend whatever it took to “fix” what damage was done to my skin–and now I am on a preventive path to consistent care and nurturing my skin daily with the entire Tu’el cleansing system. Thank you Star Brows!”

The Product Feature(s) of the month give you Double Rewards. The Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer are each in 4 oz sizes and are $50 for the set. The Travel Pack (seen right)  is $48. That’s $5 in Star Brows Rewards regularly, but ($10 this month).  And who doesn’t love FREE spa services?

And as dear old dad says, “I didn’t just save $10, I MADE $10!”

As many of you know, I won an award for a new treatment called Star Massage which utilizes the Tu’el Hydrophilic Cleansing Oil System.  This link will take you to the YouTube I produced–as well as to Tu’el’s founder Lori Nestori’s YouTube–on the Oil and Herbalizer cleansing system.

See you at the spa!

Chamomile Cream by Tu’el is a soothing, healing day and night cream for dry reactive skin. Not artificial fragrances are used to scent Tu’el products, roman chamomile gives this cream a calming and soothing effect.

The Chamomile line of skincare products addresses dry skin: The characteristics of a “true dry skin type” have to do with genetic pore size. You may be water-dry but have plenty of oil.

Dry skin types have small pores with very few large pores that make up less than 1/3 of the face. It could appear flaky around the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead, or have large pores in the nose area.

This skin type can age early. It may be congested and look dehydrated. Dry skin can feel rough because of a buildup of dry skin.

In addition to being dry, the skin type Chamomile Cream addresses is reactive to skincare products and cosmetics. The reaction may be mild to severe and may include swelling, pain, burning, itching or welts. This skin type needs to be treated gently with calming and soothing products.

Intact, healthy skin is your body’s primary defense against infection – so keeping your skin in the best condition possible is really important. Healthy skin is coated in a layer of natural lipids, or fatty substances. This keeps your skin soft and supple. This is where Hy-Drate comes in, it contains sodium hylauronate which binds the moisture found naturally in the skin.

I recommend Hy-Drate to be worn like underwear, before your sunscreen or night cream.

There are a few tips for using moisturizers: 1.) Apply all moisturizers to moist (not wet) skin. 2.) Always apply the thinnest, lightest product first. Hy-Drate is a clear, light, serum-like substance – it ALWAYS goes down first (unless you use toner). Chamomile Cream is thicker so it would follow, and sunscreen last.

What’s in Chamomile Cream?

Purified Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Avocado Oil, Hybrid Safflower Oil, Glyceryl
Stearate, Chamomile Extract, Algae Extract, Polysorbate 60,Cetyl Ricinoleate, Shea Butter,
Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Green Tea Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Palmitate
(Vitamin A), Jojoba Oil, Allantoin, Dimethicone, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Sorbic
Acid, Disodium EDTA, Roman Chamomile Oil. 2 oz. $41

And now, an announcement from Eva’s Esthetics:

***Drum Roll Please***It is my pleasure to announce the winner of the Tu’eL Skin Care You Tube Challenge. The winner has submitted 2 outstanding videos describing her use and application of Tu’eL products. She has won our Anti-Aging Gift Set valued at over $210.00 and our Tu’eL Sampler Package valued at over $1000.00. She has also won our hearts.

The winner is ********Linda Hall Ruberto************

Thanks to my beloved brand guru and model Jenn Prentice from The Style Geek and our camera man Russ (Jenn’s husband), we created this little video. It was the first one I ever did; we did it in one take, and captured gold!

Kudos to Evas Esthetics, home of the Wax Queen, Lori Nestore – who taught the country how to do Brazilian waxing. They are an amazing company! In tough economic times, they come up with ways to add value and make your dollar stretch further.

As a tribute to my win, and the notion of paying it forward – reply to this post and you may win some FREE underwear! Hydrate for the face and Hydrating Body Tonic. This dynamic duo (a $70 value) is as good as it gets – you want to have these! I call these products underwear because you don’t want to go out without them. Heed your mom’s warning “what if you get in a car accident?”:D.  These clear, light weight dermal hydrators are like water to your skin. They should be worn under sunscreen during the day and night serum in the p.m.

Read my Best Facial Moisturizer Ingredient post to find out what’s in these products that makes them must-haves.

Here are the give-away guidelines:

1.) Comment on the “You Can’t Win Unless You Show Up” post on www.starbrows.wordpress.com

2.) “Like” Star Brows on Facebook.

3.) You must pick your prize up at Star Brows in Arroyo Grande California. Sorry out of  area readers…road trip anyone? 😀

The winner will be announced on July 1 2010.

See you at the spa!

So, you’ve heard me say before that you have the skin you’ve inherited until about 30, and then  you have the skin you deserve after that. Which means, beautiful skin doesn’t happen naturally (just like the body!). So, what are the top 5 things to guarantee a great complexion?

1.) Find an esthetician that you can visit at least seasonally. Facials are a real boost to the health of the skin and a good way to get professional feedback on how your skin is doing and what it needs more or less of. Your esthetician will also get you hooked up with the best products to use for your skin.  Remember: Your skin is always changing, so what you use should change as well. There are seasonal changes that all skin types experience, and personal changes and stressors that are unique to you. Even if your skin is so problematic that you need a doctors help, that’s no excuse to neglect caring for it at home.

2.) Use great products even if this is a low priority or you have limited resources, there are some key product that really are a must. Let me tell you about a few of my secret weapons:

Facial sunscreen – USE THIS DAILY! In other words, don’t let UV Radiation hit your face without protection (UVA penetrates glass), and keep some in your purse (pocket) for prolonged exposure. In case you’re wondering, the numbers on the bottle don’t mean much; the use of them is unregulated. What does mean something is “full spectrum coverage.” Zinc Oxide is the key ingredient for achieving that.  Not to give you a science lesson, but Zinc Oxide is what lifeguards used to wear before they developed a clear formula.  (Remember that thick white stuff that covered their t-zones?) It’s an important ingredient because it is natural. You don’t have to get it full strength (bit much) but try to get a sunscreen with Zinc Oxide as an active ingredient.

Moisturizer with Sodium Hyaluronate – Sodium Hyaluronate is a polysaccharide  found in the extracellular matrix of our connective tissue.  It is a tissue lubricant that holds over 100 times it’s weight in water.  (Ok. That was REALLY a science lesson.) As we age, this ingrediant needs to be supplemented. Bottom line? Don’t use a moisturizer without Sodium Hyaluronate as one of the top ingredients. The product I recommend is Advance by Serum from DermaQuest. It contains  40% Hyaluronic Acid. Don’t worry!  It doesn’t act like an acid (burn), it is called an acid because of its molecular size and thus, its ability to penetrate the surface of the skin.

Use a foundation everyday – Before mineral makeup came on the scene I could not get my staff (at the Spa in MN), to put makeup on women after a facial, because they didn’t want to “clog the pores”. Mineral makeup doesn’t clog pores, but not all mineral makeup is created equal. I  carry Youngblood Mineral Makeup, which also has an SPF value.  Some of the minerals reflect UV, some absorb it. When wearing mineral makeup, getting a good match is key. Using it daily is also important because the enviroment stresses the skin and mineral makeup soothes and protects it. It calms redness, conceals “spots”, and evens skin tone. It is also not a comedigenic (acne feeding) makeup.

Note: Get a small concealer brush to apply minerals under and on top of the eye area before using shadow. It adds extra  UV protection and conceals redness and dark circles.

So now that you know about some great products to care for your skin, what are the remaining three ways to guarantee a great complexion?

3.) Eat right

4.) Exercise

5.) Drink plenty of water
